Seminole Patchwork Class - Supply List

Seminole Patchwork ClassOne Day

Seminole Patchwork is a strip pieced technique. Long strips of fabric are joined, cut and rejoined to make complex-looking patterns. The technique was developed for sewing machines, it is not suitable for hand-piecing.
It is not usually quilted, although there is no reason not to; the panels are great for cushions or bags, make a nice addition to garments, and can be used in combination with other patchwork techniques: they make good borders and edges for quilts and wall hangings.

We will make several patterns and put them together into a panel suitable for a bag, a cushion, or a small wall-hanging.

Fabrics:-
You will need at least four colours with a reasonable amount of contrast.
Bring 1/4 metre of 3, and 1/2 metre of the fourth. If you have 'fat quarters' they will be OK, but if you are buying fabric specially, please ask for 'long quarters'. You can bring more colours, but the patterns we will make use no more than four each time.

Seminole Patchwork was originally made in plain solid colours, and it is most effective in these. Other choices that will work well are; hand-dyes, tone-on-tone prints that 'read' as solid from a distance, and small checks, spots, or stripes. Make sure that you have at least one dark and one light colour.

Fabrics should be 100% cotton and should NOT be prewashed, or should be starched lightly to restore texture if they have been.

Thread:- 100% cotton thread in a neutral colour to go with your fabrics.
Sewing tools:- the usual pins, scissors, etc. You should have a rotary cutter, cutting mat, and a quilter's ruler.
You should be comfortable with your rotary cutter - if you are not you must do a preliminary session with me first.. Please Email me to discuss this

Sewing machine:- Nothing fancy, all you need is straight stitch and a standard foot. Please make sure that you bring the manual, put in a fresh needle, and wind a bobbin before you come.
If you have any problems with, or don't understand, any of the above, please contact me well in advance of the class.
